The Dawn of
CAJUN MUSIC
1928-1929

In April of 1928 a jeweler from Rayne Louisiana persuaded Columbia records to record accordion player Joe Falcon and his wife Cleoma by agreeing to purchase the records. Joe and Cleoma recorded Lafayette and The Waltz That Carried Me To My Grave. The records were a huge success, and for the next two years many obscure cajun artists were recorded by Columbia and Victor with the hope of finding a big seller. This all came to an end as the Depression began to take hold.
Many of these records were released in very small runs and the rarity of these old 78's has consigned many of the musicians to the dusty corners of music history.

Discographical information taken mostly from the amazing Country Music Records, A Discography, 1921-1942 by Tony Russell.

I'd be happy to post more photos and mp3's of the unreissued material listed here if anyone would like to donate copies.
